Academics Delay Retirement
First responders must not work past their retirement date as they are mandated by the U.S. government to retire no later than 57 years of age (Wagner, 2021). Federal emergency services workers can opt for an early retirement after 20 years of service. Unlike federal employees, academics often elect to work past their retirement age (Cahill et al., 2019). Retirement trajectories are unique for various professional groups (Kojolla & Men, 2016).
